Role Title:Chief Medical Scientist Job Reference Number:002511 Closing Date:Monday, 3rd August 2026 Purpose of the Role: To be responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of Haematology laboratory services assigned in the SJH Centre for Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Pathology (LabMed Directorate). To provide support for the development of services embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of change necessary to achieve organisational objectives. In collaboration with the Lead Consultant and the Laboratory Manager, the responsibilities include: Providing strategic and clinical leadership, which results in the delivery of effective, efficient, quality assured and patient centred laboratory services. Developing a shared sense of commitment and participation among staff in the development of the service. Keeping the Lead Consultant and Laboratory Manager appraised of any significant development within their area of responsibility and performing such additional duties as may be assigned. Liaising with clinicians and support service users, as required. Achieve and maintain high standards of professional practice by medical scientists and other staff, as appropriate. Scientific / Professional Oversee the delivery of a high-quality service to the patient that is adherent to and compliant with all applicable standards and statutes, including ISO15189. Engage in and support development initiatives and research activities that serve to update and expand technologies, explore new and innovative methodologies, and continually improve and modernise the offering to the patient. Be responsible for the daily operation and performance of the service, ensuring internal and external measures of quality are in place to monitor the success of the offering / through audit. Cooperate with the Laboratory Manager, Consultants, other Department leads, and Service Users within a broader laboratory and hospital environment to ensure the service provided matches user requirements and supports the clinical needs of the patient. Work with clinical, scientific and other colleagues to generate, update and sustain a vision for the service and to formulate strategy. Planning Achieve compliance and continual enhancement of the quality management system. Assist in the selection, introduction and development of information and other systems for co-ordination of data collection, communication and management. Advise on equipment selection, purchase, replacement or upgrading. Participate in the preparation of plans for the service in association with the Lead Consultant, Chief Medical Scientist (administrative head) and Laboratory Manager. Participate and co-operate with any internal or external evaluation of the service. Required: Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc. Candidates for appointment must: Be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU. See OR Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005, (see note 1 below*), must submit proof of application for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU. The acceptable proof is correspondence from the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU confirming their application for registration as a Section 91 applicant was received by the 30th March 2021. AND Possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine: MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) MSc Clinical Chemistry, University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD). MSc Biomedical Science, University of Ulster (UU) MSc Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT)/University College Cork (UCC) MSc Biomedical Science, Munster Technological University (MTU)/University College Cork (UCC) MSc Molecular Pathology, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT)/University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD) MSc Medical Science, Atlantic Technological University (ATU). OR An equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM). OR Possess Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine awarded before July 2018. OR Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to 1999). AND Possess at least seven years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of seven years full time clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist, two years of which were spent in a promotional post (e.g. Medical Scientist, Senior or Medical Scientist, Specialist). AND Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development. AND Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability, management, leadership and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office. AND Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued. On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU. And Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC). And Medical scientific knowledge and skills to provide a comprehensive service to patients in the scientific discipline of assignment (Haematology). Competent in the knowledge and practice of ISO 15189 accreditation standards, health and safety legislation. Management of a team of scientific personnel to deliver complex laboratory services nationwide. Research and development project experience. Desired: A relevant management qualification. Quality Improvements systems / LEAN training. Good knowledge of Laboratory and Hospital IT applications.
