Vets Without Borders Ireland (VWBI)

Do you bring strong experience in governance, compliance, or organisational oversight? Are you motivated by the opportunity to support a values-led organisation delivering impact at the intersection of human health, animal health, and the environment?

Vets Without Borders Ireland (VWBI) is a non-profit organisation working with small-scale livestock farmers, their families, and communities across the Global South. By improving livestock husbandry, health, and welfare, VWBI supports sustainable livelihoods, food security, and resilient communities.

Membership of the Board of Vets Without Borders Ireland offers a meaningful opportunity to help guide and strengthen the governance of a unique charity operating internationally.

The Role

VWBI is seeking to appoint a Board Member with a Governance background. This individual will play a key role in supporting the board’s effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and organisational accountability, while contributing to the overall strategic direction of the organisation.

This is a non-executive, strategic role with a focus on governance oversight rather than operational management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute actively to board governance, strategy, and decision-making
  • Support the development, review, and implementation of robust governance frameworks, policies, and procedures
  • Provide oversight and guidance on regulatory, compliance, and fiduciary responsibilities, including charity governance requirements
  • Promote best practice in board effectiveness, risk management, and accountability
  • Support the board in evaluating organisational performance against strategic objectives
  • Contribute to succession planning, board development, and governance reviews
  • Act in the best interests of VWBI and uphold high standards of integrity and transparency
Commitment
  • Attendance at approximately five board meetings per year
    • Typically one in-person meeting annually, with remaining meetings held online in the evenings
  • Willingness to contribute time and expertise between meetings, where appropriate
  • Board positions are voluntary and unpaid
What We Offer
  • The opportunity to strengthen governance within an organisation making a real difference in developing communities
  • A chance to support the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of Vets Without Borders Ireland
  • Experience of governance within an international, mission-driven charity
  • The opportunity to collaborate with a committed and diverse board
Essential Experience, Skills and Personal Qualities
  • Significant professional experience in governance, compliance, risk, legal, company secretarial, or board advisory roles
  • Strong understanding of charity governance, regulatory requirements, and fiduciary duties (Irish or international charity context desirable)
  • Ability to think strategically and contribute constructively at board level
  • Experience developing or overseeing governance frameworks, policies, and controls
  • Excellent judgement, attention to detail, and a high standard of integrity
  • Confidence to challenge constructively and support continuous improvement
