Senior Accountant Construction Specialist Location: Tullamore, Co. Offaly Salary: Competitive Base + Benefits Package Sector: Construction / Civil Engineering Our client, a leading and rapidly growing player in the construction sector, is seeking a high-calibre Senior Accountant to join their dynamic finance team. This is a pivotal, hands-on role where you will own the day-to-day financial controls and drive project profitability. If you are a commercially-minded accountant with strong construction contract experience, this is your opportunity to partner directly with senior leadership and operations teams to shape business decisions. Role Purpose The Senior Accountant owns the day-to-day financial control and reporting for the business, with particular emphasis on construction contract accounting: job costing, work-in-progress (WIP), subcontractor and retentions management, and cash flow. You will partner closely with Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, and site teams to ensure project financials are accurate, while supporting the Financial Controller and Finance Director in month-end close and statutory compliance. Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Month-End Management Accounts: Prepare monthly accounts (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) to strict deadlines. Month-End Ownership: Ledger close, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, journals, and balance sheet reconciliations. Year-End Support: Assist with statutory financial statements and external audit coordination. Job Costing, WIP & Contract Accounting Project Costing: Maintain accurate contract costing, reconciling costs to budgets and applications for payment. WIP Schedules: Prepare, review, and analyse work-in-progress schedules. Commercial Liaison: Partner with QSs and PMs on cost reports, valuations, variations, and contract profitability. Retentions Management: Review debtor and creditor retentions to ensure timely release and reconciliation. Subcontractors, Suppliers & Tax Compliance RCT Compliance: Oversee subcontractor payment certification and Relevant Contracts Tax (RCT) compliance with Revenue. Contract Legislation: Ensure correct treatment of retentions, payment notices, and pay-less notices. Ledger Control: Review and manage purchase ledger and subcontractor ledger controls. Tax Returns: Manage VAT (including reverse charge), PAYE/PRSI, and Corporation Tax alongside external advisors. Sales, Treasury & Cash Flow Billing Control: Partner with the Commercial Team to ensure timely issuance of sales invoices and supporting documents. Credit Control: Regularly review debtor balances and manage collection processes. Cash Forecasting: Prepare and maintain rolling cash flow forecasts at both company and project levels. Treasury & Banking: Monitor bank balances, facilities, bonding requirements, and support covenant reporting. Budgeting, Strategy & Controls Forecasting: Support the preparation of annual budgets and periodic project-by-project re-forecasts. Commercial Analysis: Produce ad hoc financial analysis to support tender pricing, project viability, and investment decisions. Process Improvement: Maintain and improve financial controls, policies, and ERP system infrastructure. Governance: Ensure compliance with Irish GAAP/IFRS, company law, and industry requirements (e.g., CIRI, insurance). Team Leadership Mentorship: Supervise, review, and develop junior finance staff (Accounts Assistants / Assistant Accountants). Key Contact: Act as the main finance point of contact for Directors, PMs, QSs, banks, auditors, and Revenue. Deputise: Step up for the Financial Controller / Finance Director as required. Person Specification Qualifications & Experience Professional Qualification: Fully Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA). Education: Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is highly desirable. Sector Experience: 46 years' post-qualification experience, ideally within construction, civil engineering, or a project-based industry. Technical Background: Demonstrated experience in contract/job costing, WIP accounting, subcontractor ledgers, and RCT regimes. Technical & Systems Skills Advanced Excel: High proficiency required (lookups, pivot tables, financial modelling); Power BI is an advantage. ERP Software: Hands-on experience with construction accounting software (e.g., ABM, COINS, Sage 200/300, Xero, CMAC) preferred. Compliance: Solid understanding of Irish GAAP/IFRS, VAT (including RCT), and general Irish tax compliance. Key Competencies Detail-Oriented: High attention to detail paired with strong analytical skills. Deadline Driven: Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects under tight timeframes. Strong Communicator: Comfortable presenting financial insights to non-finance stakeholders and Senior Directors. Commercially Minded: Proactive, hands-on, and capable of working on your own initiative.
